Augusto Santos Silva, president of the Portuguese assembly, on Thursday said he hoped a “positive” decision would be made on granting Georgia the European Union membership candidate status by the end of next year.
In his remarks following a meeting with Georgian counterpart Shalva Papuashvili, Silva noted his country welcomed the “correctly balanced” position of Georgia regarding the ongoing issues in the South Caucasus region, as well as in the context of the ongoing Russian aggression in Ukraine.
The Portuguese official also “positively” assessed Georgia’s cooperation and proximity with NATO and the EU.
We share the same values from a political, diplomatic or cultural point of view. We are also somewhat geographically symmetrical, I mean Portugal and Eastern Europe and Georgia in Eastern Europe. I gave a positive assessment of Georgia's cooperation and proximity with NATO, including with the European Union, in relation to security issues”, Silva said.

“It is worth noting the decision made by the European Commission, where the perspective of Georgia is even better defined. The fact that Georgia has reached an internal consensus regarding its membership in the European family is of the utmost importance for Georgia”, he concluded.
