Georgian parliament speaker highlights Portugal’s “absolute” support for country

Georgian parliament speaker Shalva Papuashvili, who is on an official visit to Portugal, on Thursday said Georgia enjoyed “absolute support” from representatives of the Portuguese parliament.
In his remarks over meetings in the legislative body, Papuashvili noted the support from the Portuguese counterparts was “important”.
“In addition to [support in Georgia’s] European integration, Portugal is our important partner in the non-recognition policy [of Russian-occupied territories of Georgia] in relations with Portuguese-speaking countries”, the Georgian official noted.

“In this regard, we have always felt practical help from them, and this will certainly continue to be the case. Therefore, it is important that the relationship between our parliaments becomes even closer”, Papuashvili said.
He also stressed the European continent could “only be at peace” once its “Westernmost and Easternmost parts” would be under “one EU and NATO umbrella” and said he hoped for Portugal’s support in the goal.
Augusto Santos Silva, president of the Portuguese assembly, on Thursday said he hoped a “positive” decision would be made on granting Georgia the European Union membership candidate status by the end of next year.
Georgian parliament speaker Shalva Papuashvili and members of his delegation on Wednesday discussed prospects for closer cooperation with the Spanish legislative body, Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations and security challenges sparked by ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict with senior Spanish lawmakers in Madrid.
The cooperation between Georgia and Spain and the deepening of parliamentary, cultural and economic ties were discussed on Tuesdayby the Georgian parliament speaker Shalva Papuashvili and Ander Gil, the president of the Spanish senate.
A Georgian parliamentary delegation led by speaker Shalva Papuashvili will visit Spain and Portugal between Monday to Saturday for high-level meetings with MPs of the countries.
Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili, together with the parliamentary delegation will hold meetings in the Netherlands and Luxembourg from December 5 to 8, the parliament’s press office said.
Spanish lawmakers on Monday pledged “strongest support” for Georgia's European integration process after the country’s upcoming takeover of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in June.
