Speaker of the Georgian parliament Shalva Papuashvili on Monday said once the European Union conditions for granting the country the membership candidate status were implemented, Georgian authorities expected the bloc to assess the process “as quickly as possible” and make an “appropriate decision”.
The comment has come as a Georgian parliamentary delegation chaired by Papuashvili is attending the inaugural Crimea Platform Parliamentary Summit, with the event hosted in the Croatian capital of Zagreb.
Papuashvili noted meetings with European counterparts were a “good opportunity” to deepen bilateral relations.
This is a good opportunity to talk about bilateral relations with different countries, including the issue of integration into the European Union. [...] We share with our counterparts our expectation that, once these recommendations are implemented, the European Union will assess this process as quickly as possible and make an appropriate decision”, the head of the legislative body said.
On June 24, the European Council granted the membership candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova, and said it would be ready to grant the same status to Georgia once the outstanding priorities outlined by the European Commission are addressed by the Georgian government.
