President of Switzerland Ignazio Cassis on Monday said Georgia could play "a good role" in ensuring peace in the Black Sea region, the Georgian Public Broadcaster reported.

Cassis made the remark to the channel while sharing concerns about the "unstable situation" in the region due to the Russia-Ukraine war.

Naturally, our focus is now on the ongoing war in Ukraine, but at the same time on the entire region, where there is an unstable situation [...] It is in everyone's interest to stop the war in Ukraine as soon as possible, to stabilise the situation in the entire region [...] Your country can make a significant contribution to this process and play a good role in ensuring peace in the region", Cassis told the GPB.

The channel also cited Cassis as saying the international community's earlier reliance on the work of the peacekeeping missions of  the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe was now "somehow blocked" by the developments.

"We want international missions to be actively represented in conflict zones in the region to maintain peace, and we are doing our best to do so", the official said.
