Georgian prime minister Irakli Garibashvili on Monday said the work of law enforcement structures was of “special importance” in building a more “just, democratic, peaceful” international society.

Garibashvili made the remark as he opened the 27th annual conference of the International Association of Prosecutors in Tbilisi, the government administration said.

In his address, Garibashvili noted issues facing the world, naming the Covid-19 pandemics, the war in Ukraine, crime “related to digital transformation”, increasing scale of money laundering and cybercrime among the main challenges.

It is obvious that today the world is going through a difficult process of renewal. The work of law enforcement bodies is of particular importance In building a more just, democratic, peaceful international society, whether at the national level or within the framework of international partnerships”, Garibashvili noted.

The head of the government stressed the development of the domestic prosecutor's office was a “constant priority” of the ruling Georgian Dream party.

During our government, the independence of the prosecutor's office has been recognised by the supreme law of the country - the constitution - and it was established as a completely independent institution. As a result of large-scale reforms, the prosecutor's office of Georgia has been established as an effective, accountable and transparent institution and is constantly developing”, Garibashvili concluded.

The event brings together 300 prosecutors from 60 countries and representatives of the United Nations, European Union, Council of Europe, United States department of justice and high-level experts in the field of criminal justice, with the event hosted in Tbilisi for the first time. The conference is organised by the International Association of Prosecutors, which involves 183 prosecution bodies from 177 countries as members.
