The second phase of the National Animal Identification and Traceability System, which incorporates information on identity, ownership, geographical location and movement of animals used in meat production, has been launched in Georgia, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation announced on Wednesday.

The phase involves novelties like a module that enables consumers to receive information about animals used for producing food they are buying, with the help of QR codes.

The NAITS electronic system consists of 25 modules, bringing together hundreds of users with information on over one million bovines. The information includes their birth and origin, health condition and data about other health-related activities, as well as slaughterhouses, to document the full path through production.

Georgia is the first country in the region to introduce NAITS, with the system first launched in the country in 2012. While the first phase of its introduction was focused on designing, building and implementing the electronic system, the second phase will concentrate on its sustainability and on “bringing it to more stakeholders”, FAO said.

The project is implemented by the National Food Agency of Georgia with the technical support of FAO Georgia and the financial support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and Austrian Development Cooperation.
