The issue of unconditional release of Georgian citizens illegally detained by de facto authorities of the Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) was in focus of a meeting between Grigol Liluashvili, the Head of the State Security Service of Georgia and Severine Chappaz, the Head of the International Committee of the Red Cross Delegation in Georgia, the State Security Service said on Wednesday.
The parties also discussed the “effective cooperation” between the ICRC and Georgia in the search and identification of people who went missing in the armed conflicts in Georgia in the 1990s and the Russia-Georgia war in 2008.
Chappaz, who has completed four years of service in Georgia, also presented her replacement Anne Montavon at the meeting.
The situation created by the armed conflict taking place in Ukraine, the ongoing occupation of Georgian regions, and release of Georgian citizens illegally arrested by occupation forces were discussed on Tuesday in a meeting between Grigol Liluashvili, the Head of the State Security Service (SSS) of Georgia, and Toivo Klaar, the European Union Special Representative for the South Caucasus and the Crisis in Georgia.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili held a meeting with Gilles Carbonnier, Vice-President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), earlier today in Tbilisi and thanked him and the organisation for their ‘important work’ in Georgia, in the country’s Russian-occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions, and along the line of occupation.
The Georgian government has created a commision uniting 10 different state agencies to find the burial sites and identify the bodies of 2,300 individuals who went missing during the armed conflicts in Georgia in the 1990s and in 2008.
