The Prosecutor's Office of Georgia has charged one person with violence for an assault on David Berdzenishvili, a leader of the Republicans opposition party, on Monday, the state body announced on Tuesday.
An inquiry by the Interior Ministry revealed the arrested individual had assaulted Berdzenishvili in downtown Tbilisi “for his political activities,” the statement said.
The assailant was arrested on the same day and charged with a Criminal Code article concerning violent persecution of a person for political activities.
The state body said it would apply to court for use of detention as a measure of restraint for the accused ahead of trial.
