Levan Kakava, the Head of the Revenue Service of the Ministry of Finance of Georgia, signed an agreement on Georgia's participation in the European Union Customs Programme on Saturday.

The Revenue Service said the Programme had already been signed by the EU Council, under the protocol signed in 2014, on Cooperation and Partnership between the EU and Georgia and the general principles of Georgia 's participation in EU programmes, which gave the country the opportunity to be involved.

Participation in this programme and the conclusion of the agreement is conditioned by Georgia, European Union, European Atomic Energy Community and the Association Agreement between their member states.

The state agency stressed the importance of the involvement in  EU thematic programmes and noted it would help bring international trade procedures closer to EU standards, as well as Georgia's attractiveness and the formation of a new investment environment, encouraging the development of the region's transit and trade potential.

The Revenue Service is launching an “important” project to accede to the Single Administration Document Conventions and implement the New Computerised Transit System, which will create a new electronic transit system connected to the Common Communication Network & Common System Interface and integrated into the Common Transit System of the European Union, resulting in “significantly” reducing the annual fee for connection and use of the transit system.
