The number of internet subscribers increased by 4.3 percent year-on-year and exceeded over one million in Georgia in 2021, the Communications Commission of Georgia announced on Wednesday.
The number of subscribers in the fixed internet market amounted to 1,009,000, of which 962,000 subscribers are private entities. Last year, fixed internet was provided to 158 new villages across the country", the Commission said.
The number of internet subscribers in the regions of Georgia increased by seven percent last year and out of 3,385 villages, the internet is now accessible in 2,351 locations.
The remaining 94,000 subscribers are distributed to various small and medium companies, the Commission said.
Revenues of the Telecommunications Companies increased by ₾114 million (about $37mln/€35mln) and reached ₾1.26 billion (about $0.42bln/€0.39bln) in 2021.
In order to ensure internet access to all populated locations across the country, the Government started the Log-in Georgia project last year, with the initiative co-financed by the World Bank and the European Investment Bank.
The project of universal internetisation started in the Ozurgeti municipality of western Georgia’s Guria region, where 29,000 citizens living in 49 settlements already have access to the internet. By 2025 the project is planned to cover 1,000 settlements in Georgia, giving access to about 500,000 people.
