17.5% of Georgian population under poverty line in 2021

A total of 17.5 percent of the Georgian population was under the absolute poverty line in 2021, a 3.8 percentage point decrease compared to the previous year, the latest data of 2021 poverty indicators published by the National Statistics Office of Georgia show. 

Geostat said the decrease had been observed in all age groups of the population last year, including: 

  • People under 18 - 22.7% (-3.7 percentage points) 
  • People aged 18-64 - 17.3% (-3.9 percentage points)
  • People aged 65 and older - 11.9% (-3.5 percentage points)

The absolute poverty rate also posted a 3.8 percent decrease for both women and men in 2021, amounting to 17.1 percent and 17.9 percent, respectively. 

Additionally, the figure decreased in urban areas in Georgia by 2.1 percentage points - amounting to 15 percent - and rural areas by 6.3 percentage points, totalling 21.3 percent. 

The unemployment rate in the country increased by 2.1 percent in 2021 compared to the previous year and reached 20.6 percent, other data from Geostat said.
