Georgia is preparing to celebrate Independence Day on Thursday with a wide range of cultural, educational and entertainment activities in capital Tbilisi and regions of the country.

Among the principal occasions marking the date will be the annual ceremony involving new recruits of the Georgian Defence Forces taking oath on the capital city’s Freedom Square.

The ceremony involving the new troops will start at 12pm local time, with an exhibition of military hardware following the occasion.

Organisers of the activities said events in Tbilisi's Rustaveli Avenue - adjacent to the Square - would be designed “for people of all ages and tastes”. Educational and entertainment areas, as well as zones for children, will be set up on the street to host visitors.

The Independence Day programme will be crowned with a gala concert at the First Republic Square, set to start at 9pm.

Organisers have designed Towards Europe as the theme for this year’s celebrations, with a promotional video with the associated tag released by the Government Administration.
