Derek Chollet, the Counselor of the United States Department of State, will visit Tbilisi on Wednesday and Thursday for consultations with Georgian partners about European security and democratic development, the State Department said on Monday.

The US official, flanked by an interagency delegation, will meet with members of the Georgian Government, local opposition and civil society representatives for discussions on Russia’s continuing occupation of regions of Georgia and its war against Ukraine.

The discussions will also involve questions of advancing Georgia’s aspirations for a “democratic, peaceful, prosperous, and Euro-Atlantic future,” the US state institution added.

On February 25, Chollet expressed his support for Ukraine and Georgia amid the invasion of the former and occupation of the latter by Russia, in a conversation with Georgia’s then-Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani.

Chollet spoke to the FM about Russia’s “premeditated, unprovoked and unjustified attack” against Ukraine, highlighting the US Government stood in support of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the two countries.

Counselor Chollet also will be in Moldova and the United Kingdom as part of his European visit.
