Georgia's European Union membership bid and the ongoing procedures related to the application were discussed by Ilia Darchiashvili, the Georgian Minister of Foreign Affairs and his Bulgarian counterpart Teodora Genchovska during a sitting of the EU Foreign Relations Council in Brussels on Monday.

Georgia's “successful progress” on the path of European integration was positively assessed at the meeting, Foreign Ministry said, adding the reforms implemented in the process and the country’s “leading position” in the direction among the Eastern Partnership states were also mentioned.

The Bulgarian side also gave a positive assessment to Georgia's completion of the self-assessment questionnaire as part of the membership application, and also reaffirmed Bulgaria's “strong support” for Georgia's European aspirations.

The Ministers said they hoped the progress would be “properly appreciated” by the EU when deciding on whether to grant a candidate status for membership, with aspirations of the Associated Trio countries of Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova noted in the context.

In discussion of bilateral relations, the two ministers underlined this year’s anniversary of 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties between Georgia and Bulgaria, and noted their readiness to further strengthen the partnership and intensify cooperation.

A particular attention was paid to the economic direction and cooperation between the two countries in the development of transit routes, taking into account the potential of the two states as Black Sea countries.

The Bulgarian Foreign Minister also extended an invitation to Sofia to her Georgian counterpart.
