Close defence cooperation between Georgia and France and the prospects for future cooperation were discussed on Thursday in a meeting between Georgian and French defence officials.
In the meeting, the First Deputy Minister of Defence of Georgia and the Deputy Commander of the Georgian Defence Forces hosted the head of International Relations of the Joint Staff of the Armed Forces of France, the Ministry of Defence of Georgia said.
Beside covering current cooperation and future prospects, the officials also expressed their support and solidarity with Ukraine and discussed the threats and security challenges in the Black Sea region following Russia’s invasion of the country.
Questions of cooperation between Georgia and Armenia in the field of defence, and relations between the two countries were discussed by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and Suren Papikyan, the Armenian Minister of Defence in Tbilisi on Wednesday.
British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss on Wednesday said Western partners “must ensure” countries like Moldova and Georgia have the “resilience and the capabilities” in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
NATO values Georgia very much as its partner, Javier Colomina, the NATO Secretary General’s Special Representative for the Caucasus and Central Asia, said on Wednesday following his meetings with the Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili and members of the Parliament’s Defence and Security Committee.
The United States will allocate $35 million to Georgia for the country to strengthen its defence capabilities against threats from Russia, Voice of America's Georgian service reported on Wednesday.
Cooperation between Georgian and Latvian defence structures was discussed on Thursday in a meeting between major general Giorgi Matiashvili, the chief of the Georgian Defence Forces and brigadier general Egils Leščinskis, the commander of the Latvian National Guard.
