Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili on Tuesday congratulated media professionals on the World Press Freedom Day and pointed out the country’s media was “pluralistic and free” with “all conditions created” for the strengthening and further development of the field.
A free and independent press, based on values and professionalism, is one of the key determinants of a country's democracy. Georgian media has gone through the most difficult path since gaining independence [in the 1990s] - withstanding many challenges, harassment and pressure,” Garibashvili said in a statement on the date.
The head of the Government said the ruling Georgian Dream party had made a priority to ensure the independence of the press since coming to power in 2012.
We have carried out a number of reforms for this purpose. Today, the Georgian media space is pluralistic and free; all the conditions have been created for the strengthening and further development of journalism. According to the Press Freedom Index, Georgia is the undisputed leader in the region and is ahead of many European Union member states,” the Prime Minister said.
Garibashvili’s comments added his Government was “committed” to “promoting further freedom” for reporters and outlets.
