The Omicron strand of the coronavirus accounts for 50 per cent of new COVID-19 cases in Georgia, Head of the National Centre for Disease Control Amiran Gamkrelidze said on Tuesday.

In the latest update on the virus, Gamkrelidze also noted approximately 20 per cent out of 1,254 confirmed Omicron cases were of re-infected patients. The data also shows 14 individuals hospitalised and 13 discharged.

The average age of individuals infected with Omicron is 33,8. All hospitalised individuals showed concomitant chronic illnesses. So far, Omicron is characterised by mild symptoms unlike other variants of coronavirus,” Gamkrelidze said.

The NCDC head called on the public to receive their third ‘booster’ doses of the vaccine, citing studies that showed its efficiency against the Omicron variant. Gamkrelidze was joined in the urge by Georgia’s health minister Tamar Gabunia today.

A total of 40 online clinics are set to be added to the existing 62 to provide services to Covid patients, Gabunia revealed, with the move aimed at easing the process of communication between health professionals and their patients.
