State funding of religious organisations in Georgia has increased by 1 million GEL ($325,743/€299,833) based on a decision of Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, the Government Administration announced on Friday.

The Administration said the decision was made due to the number of parishioners of religious organisations, clergy and their venues, in consultation with the State Agency For Religious Issues and relevant associations.

Allocated from the Government’s Reserve Fund, the increase in funding will be distributed among organisations by the Agency.

The decision was introduced to leaders of confessions by Zaza Vashakmadze, the Chairman of the Agency, earlier today. The representatives of religious associations welcomed the decision as “most important” for them, the Administration said.

As a compensation for the “religious and moral” damage caused to the organisations during the Soviet decades, religious associations received an annual Government funding of 4.5 million GEL ($1.4/€1.3) before the increase.
