Irakli Kobakhidze, the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party, said on Thursday Georgia would not be used to circumvent sanctions imposed against Russia due to its invasion of Ukraine.
The Georgian Government was exercising its “duty of care” and the National Bank of Georgia had made “relevant decisions” to prevent circumvention of sanctions, Kobakhidze said.
Georgia will not be used to circumvent sanctions - it is our responsibility. As for the imposition of sanctions, we have made a statement about it,” the GD official said in reference to the Government’s decision not to impose sanctions on Russia.
Last month, Kobakhidze said the Government’s stance on not imposing sanctions against Russia remained unchanged and “no one could change it”.
Kobakhidze also accused the United National Movement opposition party in having an “obvious goal” to see economic sanctions approved against Russia, and “involve this country in the war”, leading to “dire consequences for Georgia and its people.”
The war in Ukraine “must end as soon as possible”, and the “human tragedies we see in the 21st century must be stopped”, Shalva Papuashvili, the Speaker of the Georgian Parliament, said on Monday in a remote meeting with representatives of Georgian diaspora organisations in Ukraine.
Georgia stands with Ukraine on the backdrop of Russia’s invasion of the country, and the Georgian Government has expressed its “strong support in all international formats”, Parliament Vice Speaker Archil Talakvadze said on Friday.
The Georgian Government’s stance on not imposing sanctions against Russia remains unchanged and “no one can change” it, the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party head Irakli Kobakhidze said on Wednesday.
Georgia is in full compliance with the financial sanctions imposed by the international community against Russia due to its invasion of Ukraine, Georgian Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani said on Thursday.

The fact that Georgia maintains trade relations with Russia amid the latter's invasion of Ukraine is" neither illegal nor immoral", particularly when Ukraine itself maintains trade with Russia, Irakli Kobakhidze, the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party, said on Tuesday.
