New programme: 200 Georgian citizens returning from emigration to receive 4,000 GEL each

In order to support the reintegration of Georgian citizens returning from emigration to their home country, the government of Georgia is launching a new programme which will benefit 200 emigrants at the first stage, announces the IDPs and Eco-migrants Agency of Georgia.
As part of the programme 200 emigrants will receive 4,000 GEL (about $1,203/€1,012) each to find a source of income, employment or become self-employed.
Registration has already started, allowing Georgian emigrants to apply for the programme, and it will continue until April 5.
There were 105,107 Georgian emigrants in 2019, according to the National Statistics Office of Georgia.
Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia and President Salome Zurabishvili have congratulated Georgian citizens, emigrants and people living in the country’s two Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali on Independence Day.
Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili has voiced several programmes which aim to boost the engagement of Georgian emigrants in the country’s everyday life and help them retain close ties with their native country.
A report released by the State Commission on Migration reads that 46 per cent of Georgian families [2018] that have a family member abroad depend on this individual for their only income.
Georgia’s Prime Minister has made a plea to all Georgians living abroad to return home and help participate in the country’s development.
The unemployment rate in Georgia increased by 0.9% compared to 2019 and amounted to 18.5% in 2020, show data from the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat). In the reporting period the economically active population was made up by 50.5% of the working age population (population aged 15 and older).
The average monthly income (cash and non-cash inflows) of the Georgian population amounted to 1,194.6 billion GEL in 2020, which is 4.5% less compared to 2019, says the National Statistic Office of Georgia (Geostat).
Georgia’s state reintegration programme has offered support to 600 citizens who returned from emigration between 2020-2022, the Internally Displaced Persons, Ecomigrants and Livelihood Agency of Georgia told Interpressnews on Wednesday.
