US sends Georgia 13,000 tonnes of wheat

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food for Progress programme is donating an additional 13,000 tonnes of high-quality wheat and 4,000 tonnes of soybeans used for feeding livestock and poultry to Georgia.
A US ship brought the wheat and soybeans into Poti Port earlier today.
The US Department of Agriculture programme not only helps improve food safety and quality in the country in dairy and beef production, but also helps companies grow and develop,” said First Deputy Minister of Agriculture Giorgi Khaniashvili.
The wheat will be sold by the private sector on the Georgian market. Proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Agricultural Development Programme.
US ship Ocean Grand has entered Black Sea Poti Port, bringing in 14,000 tonne of high-quality US wheat, says the United States Embassy in Georgia.
The wheat harvest is entering its active phase in the Georgian region of Kakheti and this year’s forecast predicts 150,000 tonnes of wheat and 80,000 tonnes of barley will be harvested, announces the Georgian Ministry of Agriculture.
The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is providing an additional $3 million in assistance to the Georgian healthcare system in response to COVID-19.The US Ambassador to Georgia, Kelly Degnan, said that the CDC has been supporting Georgia to prepare for and response to the pandemic since January.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Food for Progress programme, is donating an additional 27,000 tonnes of high-quality wheat to support Georgia during the coronavirus outbreak. By the end of this month, USDA will sign 18 small grant agreements, totalling $400,000, ‘to strengthen the dairy, beef, and farming sectors and improve food safety standards’.
