For Georgia opposition calls on parliament to adopt Ukraine support act

The For Georgia opposition party founded by former PM Giorgi Gakharia earlier this year has called on the state legislature to adopt the Ukraine Support Act amid high tension at Ukraine’s borders due to the amassing of Russian troops.
For Georgia party member Mikheil Daushvili stated at the parliament’s plenary session today that current tension in Ukraine is also a threat to Georgia and to regional security.
MP Daushvili said that Georgia should express its ‘full support’ for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, its Euro-Atlantic aspirations and ‘strongly condemn’ Russia’s ‘aggressive and provocative actions’ against Ukraine in the support act.
The For Georgia would also encourage the government to ensure political, technical and other support for Ukraine if required and ‘actively participate’ in all international formats held by the UN, OSCE, EU or influential international organizations dedicated on the issue of Ukraine.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has thanked his Georgian counterpart Salome Zurabishvili for ‘a strong statement of solidarity and support’. Zelensky made his statement in response to Salome Zurabishvili who has reaffirmed her ‘full support to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine’ - a friend and an Association Trio partner of Georgia.
Georgian Parliament Speaker Kakha Kuchava says Georgia and Ukraine are destined for ‘a resolute partnership’ due to their similar history, challenges and interests. Kakha Kuchava who is on an official visit to Ukraine has met Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal in Kyiv.
Former Director of the Political Department of Georgian Foreign Ministry Giorgi Zakarashvili has been appointed as Georgia’s new Ambassador of Ukraine.
Former Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia, who now chairs the For Georgia political union, said at the party’s launch presentation earlier today that ‘we unite for Georgia, but not against anybody’. Stating that his team will be actively involved in political processes, Gakharia said Georgia now needs a political party which can ‘look the truth in the eyes’ and speak up about the challenges the country is facing nowadays, instead of living in illusions.
