Georgian Minister of Culture and former Justice Minister Tea Tsulukiani says that if there is a need, former president Mikheil Saakashvili will be brought to a civil clinic from a prison hospital.

Saakashvili has been on hunger strike for 49 days since his arrest in Tbilisi on October 1.

She stated that currently there is no need for Saakashvili to be brought to a civil clinic, as the prison hospital is ensuring all required medical care for him.

As of now there are no grounds for a transfer,” Tsulukiani said today.

She added that some other inmates are also on hunger strike, saying that this form of protest is unacceptable to her.

Tsulukiani, like the European Court of Human Rights, has called on Saakashvili to stop his hunger strike.

A medical council composed of eight health experts under Georgian Public Defender Nino Lomjaria presented its conclusion on the health of Saakashvili yesterday, stating that the patient’s condition is ‘critical,’ and that he needs an ‘immediate transfer’ to a multipurpose, well-equipped civil clinic.

The ruling Georgian Dream party head Irakli Kobakhidze has stated that the conclusion is ‘fake’ and accused Lomjaria of being biased.

He said that Lomjaria may be held accountable for the ‘fake conclusion.’
