Works by one of Georgia's prominent living painters, Levan Lagidze, are back on display in London for the third time in as many years, with Katrine Levin Galleries displaying a selection of his creations over the next week and a half.
Launched in a formal event led by Sophie Katsarava, Georgia's Ambassador to the United Kingdom, on Tuesday, the exhibition - entitled Promise - is highlighting the works bearing the textured canvases with saturated colours the painter has long been recognised for.
A preview from the gallery - which previously hosted the first London display of Lagidze in two decades in 2018 - described the artist's practice of "flattened" perspective in the paintings, leading to a presentation of their elements as equally prominent.
In a catalogue accompanying the launch of the exhibition, the works have also been noted as having been inspired by "Georgia's landscapes and cityscapes", with their appearance characterised as "outwardly abstract compositions" that "contain traces of the figurative".
[Lagidze's] aim is not to prioritise, not to ascribe secondary or primary values but to allow every fragment to form part of a universal whole. This creates a sense of paintings within paintings, as the smaller elements within larger canvases draw the eye and appear to stand alone, creating a Labyrinthian sense of art within artworks

Through Promise, visitors of the London gallery are introduced to more recent works by the artist, reflecting his creative concept of "sharing experiences", including through the mosaic-type works of the My Journey series, displayed as a combination of smaller canvases forming a larger work.
The London show introduces the artist who graduated from the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts - the alma mater for many creatives in the country - in 1981, with his works exhibited in solo displays in the United States, United Kingdom, Russia and Georgia since 1989.
Lagidze has also featured in group exhibitions at venues including London's Artbull Gallery, Galerie Seidel am Domhof in Cologne, Steiner Haus in Bohn and more. His works are included in collections found at the Tretyakov Gallery and the Modern Art Museum in Moscow, the Zimmerli Art Museum at the Rutgers University in New Jersey, and other spaces.
Promise will be on show at Katrine Levin Galleries through November 27.
