The Georgian Central Election Commission (CEC) will recount the votes of 140 district election commissions, in line with recent legal changes which oblige the CEC to recount a certain number of votes to verify their validity.

Representatives of observer organisations and media are able to attend the recount process.

Upon entering the counting centres, all authorised individuals will be promptly tested for coronavirus.

Video footage of the counting process will be published on the official website of the CEC.

Beyond recounting the votes required by law, part of the opposition is demanding a recount of the results in a number of constituencies where there were many invalid ballots.

The municipal election run-offs ended with a victory for the Georgian Dream party mayoral candidates in 19 of 20 municipalities.

Incumbent Tbilisi mayor and candidate Kakha Kaladze from the GD took 55.6% of the vote over the UNM’s Nika Melia. The UNM candidate Giorgi Kharchilava won in Tsalenjikha with 51.11% over the GD’s Goga Gulordava.

The opposition has won the majority in city assemblies in seven out of 64 municipalities – Batumi, Zugdidi, Martvili, Chkhorotsku, Tsalenkikha, Rustavi and Senaki.

Georgian opposition leaders claim the results of the election run-offs are fabricated, announcing rallies in the cities of Batumi, Kutaisi, and Zugdidi, and a large-scale demonstration in Tbilisi on October 6.
