About 1,200 people received COVID-19 vaccines in Georgia last week during the vaccination marathon, the head of Georgia's National Center for Disease Control (NCDC), Amiran Gamkrelidze, says.

The vaccination marathon was launched in the country on October 18 and involved about 50 villages in various regions of Georgia, aiming to raise awareness about the benefits of vaccination.

However, Gamkrelidze states that the activity of the Georgian population is not high within the vaccination marathon, noting that the representatives of the NCDC, local government and Health Ministry are working in 49 large towns of Georgia with a population of more than 3,000.

Vaccination alone is not the target. The aim is to provide even more information to the rural population.” Gamkrelidze said.

He also stated that around 10%-15% of Georgians are vaccinated in the areas where marathons are taking place.

Gamkrelidze emphasised the importance of ‘more communication with the population,’ saying that fear of vaccination is one of the most common reasons for refusing it.

Georgia has registered 1,942 new cases of coronavirus, 4,650 recoveries and 46 deaths in the last 24 hours, while 48,757 remain infected with the virus in the country.

A total of 925,169 people are fully vaccinated in Georgia, amounting to 32.4% of the country’s population; however, only 1,877 received a COVID-19 vaccine dose yesterday.
