The State Laboratory of Agriculture (SLA) has called on the public on World Rabies Day to test their dogs for rabies as the disease is very dangerous for humans.
The official SLA statement reads that dog owners are able to monitor the immune status of their pets by ELISA method (a method to check the effectiveness of rabies vaccine) in the SLA laboratory.
Clinical signs of an infected animal are aggression, fever, difficulty swallowing, excessive drooling, staggering, and paralysis. It is spread to people through bites or scratches, usually via saliva.
For more information about services available in the laboratory, see the website http://sla.gov.ge or call +995 32 253 09 68.
Initiated by the Global Rabies Control Alliance, September 28 is World Rabies Day. The global health observance started in 2007 to raise awareness about rabies and bring together partners to enhance prevention and control efforts worldwide.
Georgia joined the initiative in 2013.
