Georgian Public Defender Nino Lomjaria has responded to frequent attacks on journalists during the last weeks in Georgia, noting that instead of condemning such actions, political officials often show disrespectful attitude towards journalists.
Unfortunately, law enforcement agencies do not respond to all similar cases in a timely, strict or effective manner. Organizers of the violence committed against journalists on July 5-6 have not been identified and appropriate measures have not been taken to bring them to justice, which creates a syndrome of impunity”, reads an official statement of Lomjaria.
Mtavari Arkhi TV asked the Prosecutor’s Office on July 23 to launch an investigation into an incident that involved Tea Tsulukiani, the Minister of Culture, Sport and Youth of Georgia, taking a microphone away from the channel’s reporter.
The video of the incident went viral on social media channels.
The Prosecutor’s Office has not launched an investigation into the incident until now.
