Georgian world champion in Greco-Roman wrestling Nugzar Tsurtsumia has been sentenced to three days of imprisonment along with another wrestler Nika Korshia for petty hooliganism and disobedience to the police in the western Georgian town of Khobi yesterday.

Police arrested two more wrestlers Varlam Kvaratskhelia and Zaza Dateshidze together with Tsurtsumia and Korshia for an attack on a policeman.

Georgian broadcasting channel Rustavi 2 reported that the four young sportsmen were under the influence of alcohol when police warned them about parking their car near a supermarket, which ‘irritated’ the wrestlers and caused the confrontation on June 24.

The head of the Khobi police criminal department was beaten by Kvaratskhelia and Dateshidze.

TV channel Rustavi 2 announced that there are both witnesses and video footage from the scene of the incident.

The National Wrestling Federation of Georgia has refrained from commenting on the incident due to the presence of the federation leadership at the Tokyo Olympics.
