Ten percent of the infected individuals in Georgia are children, medical director of Iashvili Children Hospital Ivane Chkhaidze says.
Noting that a total of 150-200 children are getting infected every day, Chkhaidze forecasts that the Covid-19 Delta variant will be the dominant strain in the country in summer, making the epidemiologic situation in Georgia ‘more serious’.
Therefore, he and other health officials recommend vaccination as the only possible way for putting an end to the pandemic not only in Georgia but globally.
The only effective way to protect our children and grand-children is the vaccination of the elder members of their families. If the elder members of the family will be vaccinated, this would practically reduce the risk of infecting children to zero”, Ivane Chkhaidze says.
The World Health Organisation has meanwhile tweeted:

A group of Georgian doctors and scientists also agree in a joint statement that ‘the only way to defeat the pandemic is through mass vaccination and adherence to safety measures’.
The vaccine is safe and protects us from death and severe forms of the disease, as evidenced by minimised hospitalizations and lethality, given the 3.5 billion vaccines already available”, the statement reads.
Claiming that the vaccines are effective against every Covid-19 variants, the signatories urge everyone to use ‘any available vaccine’ authorised by the United States Food and Drug Administration, the European Medicines Agency and the World Health Organisation.
Moreover, they encourage those who have received inactivated COVID-19 vaccines (like Sinopharm and Sinovac) to also receive a booster dose of the vaccines produced with new technologies (like Pfizer).
The lower the vaccination rate, the higher the likelihood of the mutation of the virus and emergence of its new variants and waves, which is happening now and will again happen in the future if we fail to decrease the level of infection”, the statement reads.
Georgia started coronavirus vaccination in mid-March when the country received 43,200 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.
The country is currently using Sinovac, Sinopharm, AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines for certain groups of individuals.Registration for vaccination is available on booking.moh.gov.ge.
Since February 26, 2020 Georgia has reported a total of 395,621 cases of coronavirus, 369,483 recoveries and 5,636 deaths.
