Georgian Economy Minister Natia Turnava has visited a Polish citizen in Aladashvili Clinic today who was attacked by activists of a right-wing group during the counter-rally against the Tbilisi Pride march on July 5.

Turnava said that 'any similar violence damages our image as a tourist country'. She said that this incident is an ‘isolated case' and does not reflect the country's attitude towards tourists.

We will not allow the tourist image of our country to be damaged. I would also like to emphasise that every tourist is protected in Georgia and Georgia is one of the safest and most hospitable countries for tourists", Turnava said.

Earlier today Prosecutor Giorgi Shaishmelashvili announced that Giorgi Khmaladze, detained for stabbing the Polish citizen on Khetagurovi Street on July 5, will face criminal charges. He added that Khmaladze has been convicted of robbery in the past, and asked Tbilisi City Court to refuse him bail.

Prosecutor Shaishmelashvili also noted that Khmaladze is experiencing ‘mental problems.’ He said stabbing foreign citizens without motive shows that he is dangerous to society.

The lawyer of the offender, Giorgi Mdinaradze, said that Khmaladze needs treatment, after which the prosecutor said ‘if a mental health expert concludes that Khmaladze needs treatment, he will not remain in custody’.
