What were Georgia’s main exports and imports in Jan.-May 2021?

Copper ores and concentrates claimed first place in the list of top export items of Georgia, while motor cars were the top import commodity in January-May 2021, show preliminary data from the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).

The share of major commodity groups by export value was as follows:

  • Copper ores and concentrates - $327.2 million (21.3% of total exports)
  • Motor cars - $165.5 million (10.8%)
  • Ferroalloys $144.3 million (9.4%)

The top import commodities in January-May 2021 by value were:

  • Motor cars - $309.2 million (8.9% of the total imports)
  • Petroleum and petroleum oils - $255.4 million (7.3%)
  • Copper ores and concentrates - $233.9 million (6.7%)

In January-May 2021 the share of the top ten trading partners in the total external trade turnover of Georgia amounted to 71.6%.

Georgia’s top trading partners were:

  • Turkey ($758.1 million)
  • Russia ($598.7 million) and 
  • China ($ 552 million) 

Overall, Georgia’s external trade turnover amounted to $5.01 billion in January-May 2021, which is 18.2% higher compared to the same period of the last year.

The value of exports increased 24.4% and totalled $1.53 billion, while imports also increased 15.7%, amounting to $3.48 billion.

The trade deficit of Georgia in January-May 2021 amounted to $1.94 million which is 38.7% of total trade turnover.

In the reporting period Georgia's top trading partners by exports were China ($262.5 million), Russia ($205.3 million) and Azerbaijan ($195.6 million), while top trading partners by imports were Turkey ($624.8 million), Russia ($393.4 million) and China ($289.6 million).
