Ex-PM Gakharia’s party addresses Chief Prosecutor’s Office to investigate ruling party’s allegations of coup attempt

The For Georgia political party, which was recently founded by former PM Giorgi Gakharia, has officially addressed the country’s Chief Prosecutor’s Office to investigate the allegations of the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party Irakli Kobakhidze of an alleged coup attempt.
Kobakhidze accused Gakharia and the United National Movement opposition party of a coup attempt back in February 2021, when Gakharia was still the country’s PM.

He stated that Gakharia allegedly supported the postponement of the arrest of the head of the United National Movement opposition party Nika Melia to allow the UNM to prepare for a coup.
Kobakhidze told Rustavi 2 that the ruling party received information about the UNM’s planned coup from Kyiv and the UNM Tbilisi office. However they did not inform Gakharia, because they 'already had suspicions about him.'
He also said that up to 20 employees of the interior and defence ministries, who are not identified, were also involved in the process.
Gakharia’s party says that the accusations are ‘very serious’ and they must be investigated.

Gakharia resigned and left the ruling party back in February 2021 as he said because of Melia’s issue.
He stated that he failed to agree with the ruling party not to arrest Melia for his refusal to post bail.
Gakharia said that Melia committed a crime. However, his detention amid the election-related political crisis in the country would have further complicated the tension.

Ivanishvili stated that the reports are ‘fake’ and are ‘attempts’ to again connect his name with political issues.
The ruling Georgian Dream party has accused former Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia and the opposition United National Movement party of planning an alleged coup back in February. The ruling party chair Irakli Kobakhidze told Rustavi 2 media outlet on Friday that then-PM Gakharia had been requesting to postpone the detention of UNM chair Nika Melia for a couple of days after the court ruling for ‘groundless reasons’.
