Pianist Mariam Batsashvili is set for an evening bill of Franz Liszt, Maurice Ravel and more at Vienna Konzerthaus on Sunday, as the young talent prepares to take to the stage of the historical venue "on short notice".
Works by Liszt (waltz from Faust, Erlkönig S 558/4), Ravel (Sonatine fis-moll), Chopin, Thalberg and Schumann will be heard by the audience in the Mozart Hall of the concert hall flocking for the evening show.
Batsashvili will offer her renditions of a selection of classics following a move for her to stand in for Canadican pianist Angela Hewitt, who is not going to be able to appear at the Vienna performance hall due to travel restrictions.
The Vienna venue, tracing its roots all the way back to 1913, hosts hundreds of events and over 600,000 visitors during its annual seasons. It is promoted as "one of the largest and most artistically progressive institutions in international musical life".
On her part, Batsashvili has been called "one of the great musical hopes on the piano" (Georgian Culture Centre in Berlin) and was named BBC New Generation Artist during the 2017/18 season.
The young performer has shared stage with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra, among others, and performed at venues from St Petersburg Philharmonic to Wigmore Hall in London.
Batsashvili became subject of international attention after winning the 2014 Franz Liszt Piano Competition. The honour ranks alongside her prizes from the 2011 Liszt Competition for Young Pianists and the 2012 María Herrero International Piano Competition.
Recipient of the 2015 Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli Prize, Batsashvili released her first album in 2019 with Warner Classics and represents the high-profile Yamaha company along with other notable performers.
