Award-winning Georgian pianist shines in Indonesia

A young Georgian pianist who was the first female winner of the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition in the Netherlands has performed in Indonesia's capital city Jakarta.

Mariam Batsashvili, 21, performed at the Erasmus Huis in Jakarta on January 16. She became a household name after winning the 10th International Franz Liszt Piano Competition in Utrecht, Germany, on November 8.

After winning the prestigious competition she embarked on an extensive concert tour, taking her to more than 20 countries as part of her victory lap. To date she has performed four concerts in Indonesia.

Local representatives of culture, diplomatic corps and students attended the concert and expressed their deep interests in the efforts and achievements of the Georgian pianist.

Batsashvili studied at the Mikeladze Central Music School in Tbilisi.

Over the years she has won prizes in numerous competitions, including first prize at the International Franz Liszt Competition for Young Pianists in Weimar in 2011 and second prize at the María Herrero International Piano Competition in Granada in 2012.

She was a soloist with the Erfurt Philharmonic Orchestra and with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra on numerous occasions.
