Georgia’s Russian-occupied Tskhinvali region begins coronavirus vaccination with Russian Sputnik V vaccine

Georgia’s Russian-occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region has begun coronavirus vaccination earlier today with the Russian Sputnik V vaccine.
Local de facto health officials have stated that 20 individuals had registered for vaccination. However, antibodies were found in 14 of the 20 individuals.
Consequently, six individuals will be vaccinated.
Individuals over 18 are eligible to receive the coronavirus vaccine in Tskhinvali.
However, de facto authorities say that initially medical and school personnel will be vaccinated.
Another of Georgia’s Russian-occupied Abkhazia region has also received 6,500 doses of the Sputnik V vaccine from Russia.
Georgia has reported 359 new cases of coronavirus, 526 recoveries and six deaths in the past 24 hours.13,685 tests have been conducted around the country on the weekend. 7,795 of the 13,685 tests were rapid tests, while the remaining 5,890 were PCR tests. 2.31 per cent of tested individuals had the virus in the past 14 days.
Georgia has received the 100,000 doses of the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine earlier today. However, Sinopharm vaccination will not start until it received approval from the World Health Organisation.
Georgia has reported 788 new cases of coronavirus, 1,206 recoveries and 20 deaths in the past 24 hours.
Head of Georgia’s National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Amiran Gamkrelidze has received the Chinese Sinopharm coronavirus vaccine live on TV earlier today. Georgia received 100,000 doses of the Sinopharm vaccine, which is an inactivated vaccine, earlier in April. The vaccine has around a 78% efficacy rate and is likely to be approved by the World Health Organisation by the end of this week. Gamkrelidze stated that ‘it is symbolic I was the first who received the vaccine in Georgia,’ adding that that the vaccine has already been used in 45 foreign states.
The Democracy Research Institute (DRI) has called on the Georgian authorities to immediately draw up an effective plan to manage the difficult epidemiological situation in Georgia’s Russia-occupied Tskhinvali region.
A number of schools and kindergartens have suspended their classes due to confirmed COVID-19 cases in Georgia's Russian-occupied Tskhinvali region, RES media has reported on Tuesday.
