The EU and US ambassadors to Georgia have congratulated Georgian journalists on World Press Freedom Day.
US Ambassador to Georgia Kelly Degnan has stated that Georgian and American constitutions both guarantee the freedom of the press to report on the news and express views without fear of censorship.
A free press is a cornerstone of a democracy. That is why it is so important that we do everything we can to sustain a society that protects journalists so they can safely do their jobs. So, today, on World Press Freedom Day, let’s honor the media, for their efforts to keep us free,” Degnan said.
EU Ambassador Carl Harzell stated that in today’s digital era, ‘we are drowning in information, especially in the Covid-19-related infodemic.’

Georgia has maintained its 60th spot out of 180 countries in the latest World Press Freedom Index from Reporters Without Borders (RSF), with the country's media landscape called "pluralist but not yet independent" by the organisation.
The Communications Commission, a regulatory body in the broadcasting and electronic communications field, has dismissed allegations that the government’s proposed changes to the law on electronic communications are a threat to media freedom.
Georgia is aiming to improve its media environment and experts from the Office of the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media are assisting the country with it.
The reforms of recent years have brought improvements to Georgia’s media landscape, says French-based international non-profit organisation Reporters Without Borders (RWB).
The Georgian Charter of Journalistic Ethics has announced the winners of the Charter Prize 2021, awarding media professionals for their high-quality works published in the Georgian media.
Georgia has lost positions and ranks 89th out of 180 countries in the latest World Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders, the ranking promoting and defending the freedom of information and the press worldwide.
Georgia has jumped 12 places in the World Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders, ranking 77th out of 180 states with a score of 61.69.
