In a move dubbed a "new age in fashion diplomacy" by industry media, Balenciaga and their Georgian creative director Demna Gvasalia are teaming up with Gucci, another major name in the field, for a collection bearing signature sights of both fashion houses.

Following rumours this week of the two big names joining forces, on Thursday Gucci released a show, titled Aria, that confirmed the collab and gave professionals and enthusiasts their first look at the resulting collection.

While both labels are under the ownership of the French corporation Kering, a "power play" between the two brands is still perceived with signs of competition, with Esquire noting after the reveal the collaboration marked a diplomatic decision to "power share".

[T]he fashion world has spent the last week conspiracising and conflating. How would Demna’s subcultural gags translate to the kitsch mythology of Alessandro?

Differences between the two houses that would usually make a team-up between them seem unlikely, however the initiative comes on the 100th anniversary year for Gucci, and thus perhaps a cause to mark with a bold move.

Collaborations involving Gucci with other names in fashion have been notable in the run-up to the brand's centenary, with joint creative work with The North Face and musical artist KAI in 2020 and 2021 respectively.

Under Gvasalia's creative directorship Balenciaga have not been strangers to collaborative moves either, with the label giving Crocs shoes a runway opportunity in 2017.
