Dance Europe magazine has named Dutch National Ballet principal dancer Maia Makhateli, Georgia's award-winning stage artist, Dancer of the Year.
Makhateli was one of the eleven top principals from all over the world to be nominated for the magazine's Dancer of the Year award.
Earlier in 2019, she was included in the leading dance magazine's Critics’ Choice twice in the category of ‘outstanding performance by a female dancer’.
Born in a family of dancers in Tbilisi, Makhateli danced at the Colorado Ballet and the Birmingham Royal Ballet before joining the Netherlands’ largest ballet company in 2007.
In recent years Makhateli won ballet prizes in the United States and the 2011 Star prize, established in Tbilisi by famous Georgian dancer Nina Ananiashvili and Swiss jeweller Gilbert Albert.
She also claimed the 2015 Alexandra Radius Prize in September in the Netherlands for her performances in the previous season.
