Georgian painter Merab Abramishvili’s works sold at Sotheby’s

The paintings of late Georgian painter Merab Abramishvili (1957-2006) have sold at Sotheby’s auction.

The pieces The Garden of Eden and Man-Eater of Kumaon both created by Abramishvili 1998 belonged to a private collection in France.

The Garden of Eden was sold for £50,400 ($67,337) and Man-Eater of Kumaon was sold for £44,100 ($58,920).

Held on December 1 the auction of 'Russian Pictures', which featured Georgian painter Abramishvili's work, also presented 18th Century portraiture and academic paintings from the 19th century. The sale included a selection of Russian theatre design and a number of avant-garde works.

Born in Georgia in 1957, Abramishvili attended classes at the art studio of Georgian painter and graphical artist Alexander Bandzeladze from 1972 to 1976 before he graduated from the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts in 1981.

Abramishvili's works have featured at numerous exhibitions across Europe, with some of his paintings still found at the Georgian National Museum as well as at venues and private collections in Germany, the United States, Finland and beyond.
