Father detained for forcing children to beg in Tbilisi

A man has been detained for forcing his nine- and 12-year-old children to beg in the street or sell small items in various districts of Tbilisi since 2019 till November 2020.
V.E. made his children bring him 20 GEL every day, otherwise, he was physically and psychologically abusive to his children.
The crime is punishable from 14 to 17 years in prison.
An investigation is underway.
Child abuse cases have decreased in Georgia by almost 30 per cent, with 1,146 cases reported in January and August 2020.The figure stood at 1,624 in the same period of last year, IPN writes, citing the Agency for State Care and Assistance for the Victims of Human Trafficking. The majority of the cases of child abuse included psycholgical viollence, neglect and coercion.
About 70 per cent of children given to state care by social workers in 2019-2020 have been subject to violence, while the remaining 30 per cent have been placed in state care due to economic factors, said Deputy Health Minister Tamar Barkalaia.
Seven individuals, including a mother and two doctors, have been detained by Georgian law enforcers for child trafficking. The detainees attempted to sell a newborn child for $13,000, the investigative department of the Ministry of Finance of Georgia reported today.The ministry reports that during pregnancy the detainees found an individual who wanted the child and was ready to pay the money.
The Georgian Interior Ministry has exposed 110 cases of child abuse by their parents from January to May 2019. In 15 cases out of the 110, children were abused by their mothers while fathers/stepfathers were observed in the rest of the cases.
Czech police are searching for a 27-year-old Georgian citizen Bachuki Jalaghonia, who is suspected of a brutal attack on a 29-year-old man in the center of Prague and seriously injuring him.
The Georgian public defender and UNICEF Georgia have stated on the International Children’s Day today that the coronavirus pandemic has further aggravated the situation of children’s rights in Georgia. Ombudswoman Nino Lomjaria has stated that the risks of child abuse, poverty, violations of the rights to healthcare and education have increased amid the pandemic.
Police have detained 37-year-old Gela Chaladze, former employee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), for human trafficking in Tbilisi.
