48 new cases of HIV/AIDS reported in Georgia in January 2020

As of now registered cases of HIV/AIDS in Georgia are over 8,000. However, health officials say there might be more than 10,000 people suffering from HIV/AIDS in the country. Photo: usnews.com.

48 new cases of HIV/AIDS have been reported in Georgia in January 2020, seven cases more compared with the same period of 2019, the Infectious Diseases, AIDS and Clinical Immunology Research Center of Georgia reports.

As of January 31, 2020 a total of 8,150 HIV/AIDS cases have been registered in the country.

Among the infected 6,081 are male and 2,069 are female.

The majority of patients are 29-39 years old.

Of the 8,150, 4,271 patients developed AIDS and 1,645 have died.

Most of the HIV cases, 3,007, are registered in Tbilisi (87 of the 3,007 are foreign citizens).

  • Imereti region – 982.
  • Adjara region – 918.
  • Abkhazia region [which is now under the Russian control] – 525.

  • Shida Kartli region – 302.
  • Guria region – 174.
  • Samtskhe Javakheti region – 109.

AIDS is the late stage of HIV that occurs when the body’s immune system is badly damaged due to the virus.
