167 new HIV/AIDS cases reported in Georgia

A total of 167 new HIV/AIDS cases were reported in Georgia from the beginning of 2020 up to April 14, reports the Centre for Infectious Disease, AIDS and Clinical Immunology.

To compare, 148 new cases of the infection were revealed in the same period of the last year in Georgia.

A total of 8,269 HIV/AIDS-infected individuals are registered in Georgia, of which 6,168 are men and 2,091 are women.

The majority of infected people are from 29 to 39 years old.

AIDS has developed in 4,271 patients, while   1,674 people have died from AIDS, says the centre.

Data published by the centre show that:

  •  48,5 per cent were infected as a result of heterosexual contact
  • 37,4 per cent of infected patients are drug addicts
  • 11,9 per cent are men patients, who were infected as a result of sexual contact with male partners
  • 0,5 per cent were infected through vertical transmission
  • 0,5 per cent – blood recipients
  • 0,5 per cent – through unknown routes of transmission

Most of the cases (3,059) are reported in the capital city of Tbilisi of which 87 were foreign citizens.

116 children were revealed as HIV/AIDS infected, out of which 70 are boys and 46 – girls.
