The number of people suffering from HIV (Immunodeficiency Virus) in Georgia is on a slight upward trend, the latest medical data reveals.
As of 20 August 2018, 433 new cases of HIV/AIDS were revealed in Georgia, says the Centre for Infectious Diseases, AIDS and Clinical Immunology.
To compare, 404 new cases of the infection were revealed in the same period of the last year.
A total of 7195 HIV/AIDS -infected persons are registered in the Centre for Infectious Diseases, AIDS and Clinical Immunology. The most cases (2,622) are reported in capital city of Tbilisi of which 87 were foreign citizens.
5,382 of the infected persons are male patients and 1,813 – female.
The majority of infected people are from 29 to 39 years old.
AIDS has developed in 3,786 patients, while 1,471 people have died from AIDS, says the centre.
Data published by the centre show that:
- 40.6 percent (2,924) of infected patients are drug addicts
- 45.9 percent (3,305) – infected as a result of heterosexual contact
- 10.9 percent (781) – male patients – as a result of sexual contact with male partners
- 1.4 percent (101) – were infected through vertical transmission
- 0.5 percent (36) – blood recipients
- 0.7 percent (48) – through unknown routes of transmission
