Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has told Fox News that he wants Azerbaijan to have strategic relations with Armenia like it has with Georgia.

Hostilities between Azerbaijan and Armenia have flared up over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region nearly a month ago.

A new ceasefire agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan went into effect at 8 a.m. local time today, however was violated just minutes after.

It is difficult to predict what will happen now. It not only depends on us, because the war is not being waged by one country. It is not a unilateral process. But how I want to see the region I can tell you. I want the region of the Southern Caucasus to be deeply integrated. I want that the strategic relations which we have with another South Caucasian country, Georgia, can be to a certain degree a model of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia [at some point] in the future. Because all wars stop and peace comes”, Aliyev told Fox News.

Aliyev stated that the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, which has taken place between Azerbaijan and Armenia since 1991, can be resolved peacefully.

Georgia has urged both states to come to a peaceful resolution of the conflict, stating that regional peace is in everyone’s interests.
