Georgia’s Russian-occupied Abkhazia region to open ‘embassy’ in Syria

Georgia’s Russian-occupied Abkhazia region will open an embassy in Syria on October 6, the de facto leadership of the occupied region has reported.
The so-called official delegation from Abkhazia has already visited Damascus and is holding ‘bilateral meetings there,’ the de facto leadership of Abkhazia reports.
Syria recognised Georgia’s two Russian-occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali as independent states back in 2018, a step which was condemned by the international community.
Since the Russia-Georgia 2008 war the regions have been recognised as independent states only by Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru and Syria.
The rest of the international community is unanimous that the regions are occupied by Russia.
The Georgian occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region has plans to open a so-called embassy in Damascus Syria, after the latter became the fifth worldwide to recognise Tskhinvali as an independent state in May 2018.
The US state department has included Syria in a list of countries that recognise the independence of occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions, therefore Syria will no longer be eligible to receive US funding, an official statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia says.

Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili has condemned the opening of a so-called embassy of the Russian-occupied Abkhazia region in Syria as a ‘gross violation of international law’. She further added that Syria’s violation of Georgia’s territorial integrity 'has been and will continue to be condemned by the international community'.
