European Investment Bank to allocate €5.75 mln for Georgian road safety

The European Investment Bank (EIB) is allocating €5,750,000 to finance road safety in Georgia, announced the Roads Department of Georgia.
The grant will be used to improve the quality and safety of Georgian transportation.
Specifically, €150,000 will be used for environmental and social studies, while €600,000 will be spent on identifying dangerous sections on the east-west highway.
Meanwhile, €5 million will be utilised to have experts help the Roads Department implement projects of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T). The network aims to implement and develop a Europe-wide network of railway lines, roads, maritime shipping routes, inland waterways, railroad terminals and airports.
In 2020 the Roads Department is going to implement five projects in total to develop the roads infrastructure of Georgia. The projects include the identification of dangerous parts and construction of road signs for better safety of the roads.
These projects will be financed by the state budget, by the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
In 2019, the department implemented projects worth 8 million GEL ($2.8 mln/€2.5 mln) to develop road safety. However, projects worth 8.5 million GEL ($2.9 mln/€2.7 mln) are underway and will be finished in the first half of 2020.

5,839 road accidents were reported across Georgia in 2019, with 481 killed and 7,921 injured, the Georgian Alliance for Safe Roads says based on the Georgian Interior Ministry. The NGO reports that compared to 2018 the number of those killed has increased by five per cent, while the number of road accidents decreased 9.5 per cent and the number of injured also decreased by 12 per cent.
