A former military base in the Akhaltsikhe municipality of Georgia will soon be turned into a multifunctional recreational area thanks to a new memorandum of understanding signed between the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the municipality.

Mayor of Akhaltsikhe municipality Zaza Melikidze said that the ‘abandoned and nonfunctional’ military base has been hindering the urban development of Akhaltsikhe for a long period of time.

Last year, part of the territory of the former military base was transferred into the ownership of Akhaltsikhe municipality. We want to revitalise this territory and ensure its integration into the Akhaltsikhe urban system. This will significantly improve the livability of the city and foster local development”, said Melikidze.
