The German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) is helping to strengthen local governance and democracy and to create the requisite legal and institutional frameworks in Georgia.
For this reason the GIZ has been implementing the ‘Local Governance Program South Caucasus’, which cooperates with government agencies and civil society organisations at the national level, with pilot regions and municipalities, and with transnational networks in Georgia.
Experience gained through cooperation with the municipalities is utilised to provide advice at the national level in order to bring about country-wide change. The sector-specific topics addressed by the transnational networks are defined on the basis of the countries’ own reform programs.
Today Georgia’s Ministry of Finance and GIZ signed a Memorandum of Cooperation in Tbilisi in order to continue the above-mentioned program and implement public finance management reform in the municipalities and strengthen internal audit systems.
