Dmanisi mayor dismissed from ruling party for support of possible opponent

The mayor of Dmanisi in eastern Georgia and the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party Dmanisi regional organisation, Giorgi Tatuashvili, has been dismissed from the party for expressing support for the party’s possible opponent in the October parliamentary elections.
Tatuashvili was elected Dmanisi mayor back in 2017.
The Georgian Dream ruling party says that Tatuashvili has expressed support for Kakha Okriashvili – a former member of the ruling party, who has plans to run again as a majoritarian candidate in Bolnisi, Dmanisi, Tetritskaro and Tsalka municipalities.
Okriashvili was MP three times (he was elected Dmanisi majoritarian MP back in 2016) and is the owner of one of the biggest pharmacological companies in Georgia, PSP.
Earlier Tatuashvili worked as a lawyer in PSP.
From the ruling party, Gogi Meshveliani will run in Dmanisi, Tetritskaro and Tsalka municipalities.
No other candidates have been officially nominated to run in the constituency.
A bill has been registered in parliament per the agreement of the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party and the opposition on March 8.
The European Georgia parliamentary opposition party has nominated 14 of 22 majoritarian candidates for the regions.
The ruling Georgian Dream party has nominated all 30 of its majoritarian candidates for the upcoming October parliamentary elections, both for the eight constituencies of the capital Tbilisi and the regions. The elections in the autumn will be held in a different manner, with 120 MPs elected per the party-list based electoral system and the remaining 30 per the majoritarian electoral model. Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia said that the elections will be held ‘in full line with democratic standards and Georgian Dream will celebrate a victory in a fair fight.’
Georgian opposition parties have named six of eight joint majoritarian candidates for Tbilisi in the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Autumn.
About 30 opposition parties in Georgia have adopted a joint declaration on the upcoming October elections at a meeting held in the office of the Labour Party today.
The Labour Party has announced it will put forward Irakli Okruashvili as the joint opposition candidate in Saburtalo constituency and Zurab Japaridze in the Didube-Chugureti constituency, announces party leader Shalva Natelashvil.
